Round Gathering
Basket with handle,
March 15 & 16 in
the Mount Vernon area:
 |
This is a
great beginning willow basketmaking class. We’ll make a round picking
basket of locally grown and English willows. We start with a round base
made by twining, a sturdy base wale around the sides, English randing
for the side weave, and a strong handle to complete the base. Students who
have made this basket before can learn a new weave, make it with a tall
handle for a hanging flower basket, or make a taller version with an
inset handle to use as a waste basket.

Oval Garden
Basket, April 26 & 27 in Skagit County at the Rexville Grange:
|
 |
Katherine will be teaching a two day class at
the Rexville Grange. Folks who have taken previous classes
will be making an oval garden basket. This
is a very useful basket, and a good introduction to oval
work in willow. We will make a continental oval base using
twining and chase weave. The sides of the basket include a
sturdy 4 rod base wale with step up to three rod wale,
French randing, packing and 5 rod border. The handle is
wrapped with slender willows, students may choose between
several decorative handle ties. Beginners can make a round picking basket as
described above in the previous class. |
Oval Shopper, June 21 & 22 in
the Mount Vernon area:
 |
This
oval shopper is a great intermediate willow project. We will
weave the base on an oval hoop frame, and scallom on the
stakes. Learning to cut scalloms and attach stakes in this
way will open up a whole new way of designing baskets. The
sides can be woven in a selection of weaves. If you missed
the magazine basket class last year, this is the same
construction technique. Experience with willow helpful,
comfort using a knife essential. |
